Board of Directors

Sue Cooper, President

Sue Cooper has worked at Royal Bank of Canada for over 30 years, currently as Senior Manager Sales Support, within a Specialized Sales Force. Her background includes running a technical help desk, product development, operations and extensive client service experience with corporate clients. Sue has served in many capacities in her 25+ years of sitting on boards of directors in the Not for Profit Sector. The organizations that she has been associated with include Fife House, Red Door, Hospice Toronto, in the capacities of president, treasurer, and fund development/marketing. Sue is a passionate advocate for the not for profit sector.

Christie Ladner-Freeman, Secretary

As a consumer of Tobias House since 2005, Christie has been involved with consumer activities at Tobias. She does freelance writing for Holland Bloorview and serves as a youth consultant for a website called door2adulthood. Ms. Ladner belongs to a women’s group that promotes advocacy for women with disabilities.


James Bartlett

James grew up in the Mississauga area where he volunteered with Erinoak and the Meadowvale Lions Club. He also worked with Royal Bank of Canada for twelve years. Upon moving to Toronto, he lived at The Gage Transition to Independent Living. In 2015, James volunteered with the TTC’s ACAT Committee. Currently, he is living at Red Cross Supportive Housing. James’ interests include music, film, reading, and exploring Toronto’s eating establishments.

Janet Parsons

Janet is designated accountant with comprehensive experience in the Financial Services industry. She has held roles in the areas of Finance, Operations, and Project Management.


Frances MacNeil-Laflamme

Frances is a member of the Coxwell and Danforth community. She has worked for the past 19 years with the developmental services sector. She has provided direct community support for all age groups and their family members, facilitated person-directed planning and managed custom-tailored supports for people who have individualized funds. She has also facilitated several group workshops over the past 10 years. Frances is a member of the Individualized Funding Coalition for Ontario and the International Association of Facilitators.


Gaurav Marwaha

Gaurav has extensive experience in institutional finance. In 2000 he was named Managing Director and Head of Finance Institutions and Public Sector in Canada within Citigroup’s Global Banking. Prior to his career at Citigroup, he worked at Ontario Hydro for eight years in their Treasury area performing in various capacities. Mr. Marwaha also served as a Director for Tobias House for the period 2006-09.

Fr. Peter Knaapen

Friar Peter Knaapen is a member of the Conventual Franciscan Friars. His community was instrumental in starting Tobias House in the 1980s. He is an ordained priest for 35 years. He has worked in Parish ministry in Ontario and Quebec. He has worked with disabled individuals and the hearing impaired. He is a past President and former director of Tobias House.
